We believe adventure should be accessible to everyone.

Changing the Narrative of

What’s Possible on the Trails

Founded in 2018 by Jeffrey Lockwood, The Lockwood Foundation is a Colorado-based 501(c)(3) community organization dedicated to redefining access to the outdoors. Through innovation, teamwork, and the power of human connection, we make it possible for individuals with limited mobility to experience the beauty and challenge of Colorado’s mountain trails.

What began as one man’s vision to create an adaptive hiking program has grown into a vibrant community of volunteers, athletes, and adventurers united by a shared belief — that every person deserves the chance to summit their own mountain. With adaptive trail chairs, dedicated volunteers, and a spirit of inclusivity, we’ve helped participants reach iconic peaks like Mt. Elbert and Quandary, proving that with the right support, the impossible can become possible.

Together, we’re not just hiking trails — we’re breaking barriers, building community, and changing perspectives one adventure at a time.

Together, We Rise

When life changes in an instant, the mountains can feel out of reach — but not with The Lockwood Foundation.

In September 2023, adaptive athlete Chris Layne proved that courage, community, and determination can overcome any obstacle. Nine years after a hiking accident left her paralyzed from the chest down, Chris returned to the high peaks of Colorado — this time with the support of 50 volunteers from The Lockwood Foundation and her family — to summit Mount Elbert (14,438′), Colorado’s highest mountain.

Her journey is more than a story of resilience. It’s a reminder that with the right support, no summit is out of reach.

Our mission is to create life-changing opportunities for people with limited mobility to explore trails and mountains once thought impossible.

Join the Community That Makes

Adventure Possible

We believe no mountain is too high when we climb together. Every summit, every smile, every mile — it all happens because of people like you.

Our volunteers are the heart of The Lockwood Foundation, helping adaptive athletes experience the outdoors in ways once thought impossible. Whether you’re guiding a Trailrider, cheering from the sidelines, or helping plan community hikes, your time and energy make adventure accessible to all.

No mountain is climbed alone — and together, we’re breaking barriers, building friendships, and proving that the power of community can move mountains.
